Wilmington, North Carolina has a truly fascinating history that dates back to its establishment in 1739. However, it was not until the late 19th century that the area really began to grow and develop as a manufacturing powerhouse. From then through the 1920s, Wilmington's role as a major industrial center was very much in full swing; railroads were being built, new business and manufacturing companies opened up shop in the city, and new schools and hospitals got their start. This period of time was capped off by the creation of University of North Carolina at Wilmington campus in 1947.
