Wilmington, North Carolina has a truly fascinating history that dates back to its establishment in 1739. However, it was not until the late 19th century that the area really began to grow and develop as a manufacturing powerhouse. From then through the 1920s, Wilmington's role as a major industrial center was very much in full swing; railroads were being built, new business and manufacturing companies opened up shop in the city, and new schools and hospitals got their start.
